"Open" vs. "Proprietary" Workflows - Choosing the "Right" Solution

As the technology world rages on, proprietary workflows always seem to be a part of it. Proprietary workflows can lock companies into long-term commitments and capitol investments that are difficult if not impossible to recover or change when technology changes or if the supplier might cease to exist.

An open architecture environment can be far superior when investing in digital and prepress workflows. Open ended workflows afford the end user the ability to change devices such as moving from an imaging device to CTP or an affordable upgrade path to their existing Open Workflow.

Open architecture is just that, you can drive virtually any digital imaging device whether it is an older imagesetter or proofing. Many users will want multiple devices in a single environment meaning one RIP including proofing and still have the ability to change anywhere in the process. Typically, with open workflows, your capitol investment is decreased, and the upgrade path is minimal.

Cost & Training - The cost of an open workflow will often run 33% - 50% less than a proprietary workflow. This is usually because many open workflows are not sold by the "seat" as some proprietary solutions.

Another possible disadvantage to more proprietary workflows is in training. Initial training requirements may have to be at the developer's site with a follow up at your facility which can increase costs. Open workflow training is usually on site at time of installation and generally requires less time, which decreases losses in production time.

Tips: Do your homework. Make sure you get the best fit for your environment. Look at all associated costs such as training expense and installation costs. Avoid investing in a workflow that has been written for offset and has only a few flexo features. There are a few very good flexo driven workflows or add-ons to your existing workflows that can make you more productive.

Finally, workflows are like health care... Get a second opinion. And, ask about support not only from the manufacturer, but also from the Dealer.
