Gamut ModelExpanding the gamut in flexo print reproduction….when’s the right time and what’s the right path? More and more flexible packaging converters are being faced with these decisions due largely to pressure from end users and the ongoing quest towards process efficiency. Unfortunately, there is no "one size fits all" solution out there when it comes to answering these questions. The application of 7/c "ECG" (4/c process combined with OGV or RGB) is certainly gaining momentum in the industry and has demonstrated proven success in many situations. But, due largely to several fairly recent technological innovations and advancements, the case can also be made for expanding achievable gamut capability through the use of 4/c process itself. The most effective path forward and timing in “taking the plunge” are very much situation-dependent. Whichever route a particular printer may choose in expanding gamut reproduction capability in their operations, the key to successful implementation lies in a stringent process control program. We address this point in part one of a two part article series appearing in the November issue of FLEXO magazine.
