Harnessing the Power of Prepress
It's time to start thinking outside the box and look at alternate ways to help drive improved efficiencies in the pressroom. When considering solutions to better manage the production workflow in the pressroom we often turn to those resources we have direct control over and are directly integrated with the press and pressroom. Objectives like improving set ups, decreasing make ready times, decreasing waste and minimizing downtime are typical drivers for the pressroom and we often resort to exploring localized procedures, equipment and tooling to affect a positive change. But do this for me, lets take a couple steps backwards, further upstream. No, further, …before platemaking. What about that corner over there? That room of mystery and black magic we call Graphics or Prepress? Are there any long reaching processes or solutions here that could help the pressroom? Is it possible to employ prepress software to help influence changes in the pressroom?
The simple answer, Yes. But you already knew that. Prepress and the Pressroom have always been symbiotic - different production species living together but not always in a way that benefits each other. Of course it doesn’t have to be this way. In fact, the real key is communication. And no software can really force you to talk or listen (though I should acknowledge there are solutions to assist in this too); however, there are tools that we can harness to better enhance the inherent dependence of these two systems… and if you do it right, it can be a beautiful thing. Ahhh.
